Where is Tioman Island?
Tioman is home to 8 villages dotted along the coast. The charming thing is that a lot of those villages are not connected via a road although some of them are. Which can feel restricted but also bliss.
There are 8 villages dotted along the coastline mainly on the west side of the island:
Â
Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang and finally Salang. They can be reached from Mersing jetty with Bluewater Express.

Juara, Nipah and Mukut are served by Cataferry from Mersing.
Why go there?
I personally haven't visited all the villages (yet) but I went to Salang. Just because it was the final stop and I love to be as remote as I can possibly be, especially on an island.
Salang is also one of the best places if you are into diving because it is said to have the best spots and scenes.
I did my Advanced here and had a great time. This island is in general all about unwinding, eating, and diving.
And you'll be surprised how many places you can hang out in Salang. It has excellent accommodation, great food and maybe the best diving on Tioman. And as a bonus, you'll see BIG lizards in the river running through the town!
When to go?
March- October are the best times for diving as usual in Malaysia.
Visibility is quite good and ranges from 15m to 30m.
Water temperatures range from 26- 29°C so a 3mm wetsuit is usually the way to go all year round.
Who & How to go there?
To get to Tioman you'd best go to Mersing Jetty and book your ticket there.
Â
A return ticket for 1 adult will cost you around $22 and you will have to choose which village you will want to be dropped off. The travel time is between 2-3 hours.
